Not to be confused for the RPG series with a similar name, Swords & Sandals is an unreleased platforming game that was created by Oliver Joyce, using the Game Foundry program in the late 1980s. The game contained two levels, before it was eventually scrapped. However, many of the ideas used for this platforming game would later find themselves in the gladiatorial combat game known as Swords and Sandals I: Gladiator.

Development[]

According to Oliver, the game was created in the late 1980s with the use of the Game Foundry program. It only reached two levels before he eventually gave up on its development. The idea of the game was completely different to the Gladiatorial combat game that he would later be known for, but elements of its design and character building would still make their way into the Swords and Sandals series, as seen in the artwork and screenshots for this early game. The name would also be re-used as the name for the first Swords and Sandals game, when he realised that it wasn't already taken.

Similarities[]

A list of known similarities that can be seen in the released screenshots for Swords & Sandals:

  • HeChaos can be seen at the bottom right of the cover art.
  • The universe that the game is set in was also called Brandor.
  • The kingdom that the player starts the game in was also called Phaetor.

Differences[]

A list of known differences that can be seen in the released screenshots for Swords & Sandals:

  • The game was meant to be called Swords & Sandals and not Swords and Sandals.
  • It was meant to be a platforming game, instead of a gladiatorial Roleplaying game.
  • Other creatures such as Wizards, Goblins and Leprechauns can be seen on the cover art.
  • The art style for the game looked completely different to the flash-based art style, that we are familiar with.
